Trying to explain a deep truth or knowing to another is incredibly hard. We might use words like belief or faith but even they, powerful as they are, don’t really do it.
Truth, Reality, Knowing are all the domain of the soul and unless we have a relationship with our soul it can be really hard to contact deep Knowing. The poet Walt Whitman said’ “Whatever satisfies the soul is truth.” I like this and as I ponder it, it feels like it could be true – I do know being in contact with the soul matters.
You might be thinking but why does it matter – I know what I know, I believe what I believe and that’s fine for me. And yes of course, that can be the case. And yet…for many if not all of us, when we stop and really listen to ourselves, we connect with something else, something bigger, deeper, more profound…even if we don’t have the words for it. It maybe a question, a searching or a gentle or more profound ‘unease’.
And never more so than in times like those we are facing as a Humanity today. Turmoil, conflict, uncertainty, destruction…how do we make sense of all of this if not without access to a deeper Knowing?
‘A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.’ Albert Einstein
Without a deeper knowing we risk living as Einstein describes above – separate, imprisoned, seeing only the part and not the whole…in conflict.
When we hear of the uplifting stories of billionaires buying huge rainforests to protect them, or people like you and I taking the time to care about every kingdom of nature and our neighbour, we might redefine the Truth of the destruction, because we are in contact with a different part of our knowing.
A different part that trusts in and believes in the essential goodness of Humanity. The part that can see that we need to break down old structures, beliefs and mindsets to set ourselves – individually and as a humanity – free. Maybe that’s a knowing we hold? There will be others, likely different that you hold. The key is, are we daring to go into the enquiry?
Knowing is consciousness. It is the willingness to think more deeply, see more widely and enter into the silence to be in relationship with the Truth and knowing present in our soul, and the souls of all living beings.
Buddha said, ‘Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.’
Maybe we are heading towards a more profound and uplifting truth or knowing of our part in the evolution of Humanity and the Planet? Maybe we are preparing to step up?
