Have you noticed how often heart comes up in our everyday speech?
Take heart, put my heart and soul into it, heart in the right place, heart of gold, wearing one’s heart on one’s sleeve, heart in your mouth, change of heart, heart to heart. I could go on, and you will have your own favourites, but, safe to say, a simple Google search will reveal more than 100 idioms featuring the heart.
Perhaps it is not surprising given the role the heart plays in human functioning as our fundamental ‘engine’. Our heart, though, is so much more important than that isn’t it? It is the seat of our love for our fellow humans, the deep well of our courage, compassion, discernment, wisdom, passion and so much more.
Yet its ever-presence may mean we spend less time contemplating this wonderful organ of life, nurturing its quality and power and bringing it more consciously into how we are in the world and with others.
As we seek to build a better world for all, to set a higher example as we navigate the current turbulence, reflecting on how present our heart is in all that we do is a powerful starting point for our service in this endeavour.
From this more heartful space we will be bringing our heart and soul, consciously, into our thoughts, our words and our actions, and becoming a beacon for others to do the same. Imagine the difference we could make together.
