For us humans the existential question ‘what am I here for?’ probably arises from time to time, perhaps more understandable in times when it is hard to make meaning of events or see a bigger picture emerging from the petty squabbles we see at even the highest levels of national and international leadership.
If we’re lucky we have an answer to this question that is deep, meaningful, takes us beyond the mundane moments and concerns of the day to day.
Often, though, getting clarity on our life purpose can be elusive. It takes dedication, discipline and much work. Before this endeavour though it is worth getting clear what we mean by purpose.
It is very much of the zeitgeist and increasingly embedded in our psyche as our calling, or vocation, or perhaps passion we discover and are fortunate enough to pursue for our work. At one level these can all be expressions of purpose…in the physical world.
But the answer to the existential question is of a much deeper and higher order. It is an inquiry of our soul and its purpose, seeking to reveal the qualities of our life and life itself. To find our unique version of that we are working with our inner world and a wisdom beyond our basic cognitive powers, something divined intuitively from the higher realms.
More important, what we discover is our commitment to service, both to our higher Self and to the greater good of humanity and our planetary home. There, we have our true calling and our answer to ‘what am I here for?’
As Rumi put it all those centuries ago: ‘And you? When will you begin that long journey into yourself?’
