“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little PrincePreview

The Little Prince is a powerful and well know book but I wonder if you have ever contemplated the idea of seeing with the heart. In my experience whenever I engage my heart in any situation it inevitably brings different qualities to bear; more openness, vulnerability, compassion. I also know that it doesn’t always come naturally or easily for me to engage my heart in every situation which is something I have been pondering and seeking to change for many years now.

What I haven’t thought about so much is the idea of seeing with the heart and that by seeing with the heart we get to see what is essential. I can, however, imagine that if I were more able to see every situation with greater openness, vulnerability and compassion, I would open myself to new information – about myself, the other and the situation.

But what does the heart show us that is essential? My sense of this is that it shows us the oneness of everything. Let me explain. This morning I was looking at a camellia that I had cut from a bush in my garden – it is a gorgeous reddish pink with a vibrant yellow stamen. As I looked at it I not only saw the physical beauty and perfection of the flower I saw so much more than that. I saw or I should say experienced a profound sense of love and oneness with the flower. For a fleeting moment I knew the camellia as myself, we were one entity.

Imagine if we were able to connect with this essential oneness in all aspects of our daily life and allow that to inform our relationships with others and our world.
